The MS Acalympics Contest at Lyman Middle School, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19 has been postponed to March 5.

Karmen Merrill, a 7th Grade student at Sully Buttes, is the first ever ABO string student to be selected to perform as a member of the Middle School All State Orchestra in Mitchell this weekend, February 21st through the 22nd.
The South Dakota Music Education Association presents the event, and features Dr. Peter Foillard as conductor. The public is invited to attend the Grand Finale concert in the Mitchell Performing Arts Center at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. There is a suggested donation of $5 per person to attend the concert.
From 185 auditions, 86 string players in grades six through eight from across the state make up this year's orchestra. Karmen spent hours in lessons with her viola instructor, Mrs. Moriah Gross preparing a 3-octave major scale and 2-octave melodic minor scale. In addition to performing the scales, Karmen was required to perform an Etude as well. Karmen was chosen after mastering the rigorous tryout material.
Recently, Karmen received additional coaching from another teacher, Ms. Natalie Sterba of Sioux Falls. By attending virtual appointments with Ms. Sterba, Mrs. Gross and Karmen were able to prepare the exciting repertoire for her upcoming performance. Music by Bach, Rossini, The Beatles and more will be worked on by the handpicked pupils during the rehearsals scheduled. Mrs. Erica Paxton assisted in the encouragement of numerous focused and quality practice efforts of all the pieces assigned.
When Karmen isn't honing her viola skills with discipline and precision, she enjoys playing volleyball, reading Shakespeare and spending time with family. She is also an accomplished pianist and flautist. Karmen is the daughter of Maghan Hiller Merrill and Brian Merrill.
